Booking your first Reformer Pilates class is exciting, and it is completely normal to feel a bit unsure about what will happen once you arrive. The Pilates Boutique is a Pilates studio in Heathfield, East Sussex, and the aim is clear coaching in a safe, friendly environment so you can move well and feel better afterwards.

Start With The Complimentary Induction

If you are new to the studio or new to Reformer Pilates, The Pilates Boutique recommends booking the complimentary 30-minute Reformer Induction first. In that session you learn key safety features, how to adjust the Reformer to your height, and how to set springs and the foot bar. You also practise moving around the equipment so you feel confident setting up during a group class.

If you are keen to book quickly, this induction is one of the simplest ways to settle nerves and make your first Reformer Pilates class feel straightforward.

Select The Right Class

A great first experience often comes down to selecting the right class level. Essential Reformer is designed as the natural next step after the induction, and it is structured to suit a wide range of ages and abilities, with options so you can work within your own body’s capabilities on the day.

Intermediate is not suitable if you are new to the studio. It is physically demanding and faster paced, with progressions layered from intermediate towards more advanced work. It is also not suitable for those with osteoporosis or joint pathologies, and if you are carrying an injury, you must be able to manage it accordingly.

If you would like a calmer option, Restorative is gentler paced, with modifications and an emphasis on functional movement, alongside stretches to help release tight muscles and improve range of movement.

If you are unsure, it is always better to start steadier and build. Your confidence will grow quickly when you feel secure with the fundamentals.

Be Honest

Because Pilates is exercise, it is important to let your teacher know anything that could affect how you move. If you have an injury, a medical condition, or pain you are worried about, speak to an appropriate healthcare professional before starting a new exercise programme. In class, tell your instructor how you feel so they can coach you responsibly, and so you can be offered suitable options where appropriate.

Consider Private Training

Some people simply feel more comfortable starting one-to-one. The Pilates Boutique offers a 1:1 private Reformer Pilates session for one hour with Lisa. If you feel you need more guidance after the induction, or you would rather have dedicated support from the start, private training can be a brilliant stepping stone before moving into group classes.

Keep Comfort In Mind

For your first Reformer Pilates class, wear comfortable clothing that you can move freely in. Many people find more fitted options work well on the Reformer because your teacher can see alignment more clearly and fabric is less likely to get in the way. Aim to arrive a few minutes early so you can settle in and start calmly.

The studio is equipped with Align Reformers, mirrors, and small equipment, which supports a focused environment for learning and progressing.

Focus On The Fundamentals

A first Reformer Pilates class is not an assessment. It is a chance to learn how the Reformer works, how your body responds, and how to move with control. A results driven approach can be especially helpful at the start because it encourages precision and patience, rather than rushing or forcing range.

If an exercise feels unfamiliar, that is expected. Listen carefully, take your time, and let technique build over repeat sessions.
